Be sure to call a tow truck if you car becomes disabled instead of trying to fix it yourself

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Don''t try to fix damage caused by a traffic accident by yourselfMotorists who find themselves pulled over to the side of the road with a broken down vehicle should use any means necessary to have a mechanic deal with the vehicle instead of trying to fix it themselves.

According to Mike Pickard, the head of underwriting for esure car insurance, the cold weather that comes with the winter months usually cause an up tick in motor problems that lead to an increase in vehicle breakdowns, the Daily Mail reported.

He added that a recent survey conducted by esure had found that one in ten motorists who find themselves in trouble on the road try to fix the problem themselves while pulled over on the side of the roadway, a decision that can be prove to be dangerous.

“Attempting to fix your car on the motorway hard shoulder inches from cars traveling at 70 mph without the aid of specialist hazard lighting and professional equipment is madness,” Pickard told the Daily Mail.

Instead, Pickard suggests that motorists get out of their vehicle and stand behind the guardrail while calling a local mechanic to come and pick the car up.

If a motorist affected by a breakdown does not have the funds to pay for a tow truck, they should consider a payday loan to cover the expense rather than putting their lives in danger trying to fix the problem themselves.

What to do if insurance won't cover your childbirth

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Pre- and post-childbirth costs can prove to be a burden for families struggling to make ends meetIf a family expecting a child finds themselves lacking the appropriate insurance to cover costs associated with the procedure, they may find themselves in sudden need of funding to pay for pre- and postnatal care to avoid getting left with a financial burden.

In a recent New York Times article, the family of Richmond, Virginia resident Adrenne Schroeder was used as an example of how people can end up stuck with high medical bills.

Because she and her husband Dave had health insurance with a $4,000 deductible that resulted in high out-of-pocket costs, their most recent pregnancy left them $2,000 in debt.

While some families facing the birth of a child may consider taking out special insurance to cover costs associated with it, many issues may persist in getting coverage, especially if the pregnancy is unexpected.

According to InsuranceAgents.com, while pregnant health insurance is a relatively easy way for expectant mothers to ease the financial burdens that can come with childbirth, women with unplanned pregnancies may not be able to benefit from the insurance because many providers will only accept applications before a pregnancy occurs.

As a result, costs that pile up during doctor visits, hospital stays, and other various prenatal medications may find their way onto the parents-to-be instead.

If families with expectant mothers find themselves in a poor financial situation or without the proper insurance to cover costs associated with childbirth, payday loans may be an easy way to pay for important treatment or care.

FICO releases rationale behind how they gauge their credit scores

Monday, November 30th, 2009

FICO revealed the rationale behind their credit scoresIn an attempt to show consumers how the financial errors they make can come back to haunt them by damaging their credit score down the road, FICO has released some of its stipulations regarding how they keep track of their own scores.

According to CreditCards.com, even a slight slip up like accidentally maxing out a credit card can result in drop of up to 45 points from a FICO score hovering around 780.

A 30-day late payment on a card also can have a significant effect on a score, dropping it anywhere from 60 to 110 points.

However, foreclosures and bankruptcy filings took the cake for having the worst effect on ones score. While foreclosures can reduce a score by up to 160 points, a bankruptcy filing can cut a score by close to 240 points.

“I hope this information will help people to better understand FICO scores and the value for them of avoiding credit missteps. It illustrates key points such as the higher your score, the farther it can fall if you stumble,” said FICO spokesman Craig Watts. “Getting and maintaining a good score isn’t complicated. We all just need to pay our bills on time, keep credit card balances low and take on new debt sparingly.”

For those who are worried about accumulating unneeded debt through sudden expenses they cannot budget for, taking out a payday loan may enable them to cover a significant one-time cost while knowing that its purchase covers no immediate threat to their credit score.

Pneumonia cases linked to H1N1, CDC urges for public to get both vaccinations

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Doctors have seen a connection between the H1N1 virus and pneumoniaWhile the potentially detrimental effects of the H1N1 virus have now become well known by most, a new link is being seen between the virus and complications that are leading to bacterial pneumonia.

As a result, the U.S. Center for Disease Control is now recommending that adults who may be at risk for both illnesses receive vaccinations for each one, CNN reported.

One who is “at risk” for landing either one of the illnesses may already be paying high prescription costs for other maladies or facing debt management issues that make them unable to afford both vaccinations. A cash advance may be the financial answer to allow for the proper vaccinations to be applied and ensure that one remains healthy.

The concern regarding the link between both viruses stems from a noticeable rise in pneumonia cases that does not usually occur when patients are only dealing with the seasonal flu.

While Denver, Colorado hospitals usually see approximately 20 cases of pneumonia every October during the regular flu season, they saw 58 cases this season.

“We’re seeing an increase in serious pneumococcal infections around the country,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the head of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told CNN.

She added that only 25 percent of high-risk adults under the age of 65 had received the pneumonia vaccination so far this year.

Fewer mammogram screenings add increased importance to screenings that remain

Monday, November 30th, 2009

New studies suggest that women under 50 years of age should get fewer mammogramsThe U.S. Preventative Services Task Force has recommended that women under the age of 50 should hold back on getting routine mammograms for the risk that they may not be as helpful at that stage in a woman’s life.

The guidelines released by the independent panel of experts found that women between the ages of 40-49 who get regular mammogram screenings have too many false positive tests that can lead to unnecessary testing and treatment. It did recommend that women above the age of 50 should get tested every year.

While the PSTF has only now recommended that younger women hold off on routine mammograms for the risk of false positives, many women who do not currently have insurance have likely been holding off on regular check-ups for financial reasons for a longer period of time.

Still, as evidenced by the controversy that the report has garnered, getting a mammogram could be the difference in detecting cancer that could be fatal. If fewer screenings are being performed, than that adds importance to each test as well, as missing one could be a missed opportunity at detecting a growth early.

If one is not covered by insurance to receive a mammogram, or must pay for a portion of the screening on their own, taking out a payday loan may make costs more reasonable while providing a potentially life-saving treatment as well.

Be aware of how the bonding process from a jail works

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Not all bonds get refundedThe motions that one must go through when posting a bond is often not known by most until a sudden situation arises in which someone is pushed into the position of having to either bail themselves or a close acquaintance out of jail.

However, if someone finds themselves in need of money to post a bond, a payday loan is a viable means to quickly get the cash needed to pay the expense without requiring the help of a bondsman.
A cash bond is a payment to release a defendant from jail to await their trial date that is paid fully in cash by someone over the age of 18.

In some cases, namely if the defendant is found guilty of charges, bonds can be retained to pay for court costs and fines. Otherwise, if all charges are dropped or a defendant is found to be not guilty, the person whose name is on the cash bond will often receive a full refund, according to a government document explaining the motions from the Bannock County Courthouse in Idaho.

If one cannot bail themselves out of jail with their own funds or help from those close to them, they can take out a surety bond through a bondsman that is backed by an insurance company.

However, surety bonds carry a premium fee as a sheriff’’s fee that are not refundable and could plunge someone who is already struggling with finances – and perhaps further legal troubles – into further debt.

Pet medical costs can be pricey, but essential to keep them comfortable as they age

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Pet medical expenses can rise quickly as they ageAs pets age, their bodies can often begin to betray them as additional medical problems begin popping up that need attention from doctors to keep them healthy and comfortable.

Such is the case with Czar, a German Shepherd who had served as the drug dog for the Bridgeport Police Department for five years.

“He was involved in ending an armed standoff in 2007, and he was able to find 10 1/2 pounds of marijuana at a post office in Clarksburg,” Scott Carpenter, a Bridgeport Police patrolman and partner of Czar during his time on the force, told NBC affiliate WBOY-TV.

However, the work took a toll on Czar’s body, leaving him unable to run or walk normally. After a visit to the veterinarian, Czar was diagnosed with a neurological condition that could lead to paralysis if he does not receive an MRI and spinal surgery that could cost up to $3,500

“Even though if you look at him, he doesn’t show it, it has to be uncomfortable,” said Dr. Scott Moore, a Veterinarian at Fairmont Veterinary Hospital, according to WBOY. “Also, it’s causing him to stumble, on the left more so than the right. That’s what causing him to not be able to work at this point.”

In order to raise money to cover the surgery costs, the Fairmont clinic held a discounted rabies clinic with all proceeds going to Czar’s medical costs. However, for families with pets who are suffering from similar diseases that require expensive care, payday loans may be able to account for some of the costs.

Unexpected fire costs should always be a worry of home and business owners

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Fire costs can easily get out of controlNo matter how many precautions are taken through the installation of fire alarms and proper use of electronics to prevent overheating, the unfortunate reality is that all houses are susceptible to extensive damage caused by a sudden fire.

If a home or business is seriously damaged by a fire to the point it is practically uninhabitable, taking out a short term loan may be able to help with the finances needed to begin the complicated rebuilding effort.

One example of an unexpected fire that ended up causing thousands of dollars in damages recently occurred in Forest Grove, Oregon on November 12 when a local nursery caught fire due to an uncommon cause, the Forest Grove News Times reported.

Police and fire officials responded to the fire at Glenn Walters Nursery at 5:40 p.m. to find the 90-by-150 foot building on fire. After the fire was put out, causing $20,000 in damages before it was finally contained, the cause of the blaze was attributed to large amounts of barkdust that had been compressed too tightly when stored, the News Times reported.

The compression caused the barkdust to heat up and begin to smolder before fully igniting.

Along with unexpected fires that could break out and cause damage to a home, many fire stations are seeing their budgets cut during the recession, slowing their effectiveness and response time that could lead to additional damages to a structure.

Medicare's Plan D to increase premium rates in 2010

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Medicare Plan D premiums will rise in 2010A recently published report published by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation has found that senior citizens who are enrolled in Medicare’s Part D drugs benefits package will see an 11 percent rise in their monthly premiums during the program’s open enrollment period.

After the increase, monthly premiums will set back enrolled members $38.94 in 2010. In addition to being higher than 2009’s costs, it is also an increase of more than 50 percent when compared to the monthly premium cost of $25.93 in 2006 during the first year of Medicare’s Part D program.

Jack Hoadley, a research professor for Georgetown University’s Health Policy Institute and one of the report’s authors, told U.S. News and World Report that the changes for premium prices did vary according to the plans offered.

“Just among the five most popular plans, the premium for one is up by 22 percent for 2010, while the premium for another is down by 3 percent,” he said.

For those who will stomach the increased premiums, as well as those who decide to abandon the program altogether if rates get too high for them, prescription costs may become a problem for those with limited funding. Payday loans may be able to help senior citizens who need medication to survive but may not have all of the money for their costs immediately available.

Costs build up for cancer patients as they go through treatments

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Cancer-related costs can build up quickly for patientsAs the economy continues to sputter to a recovery, debilitating diseases such as cancer that affect people and require numerous expensive treatments can take a toll on families’ financial statuses.

While likely unable to deal with the entirety of expenses that can be racked up while one is battling cancer, especially if income is limited as well, short term loans may be able to ease the financial strain and pay for one-time medical treatments to battle the disease.

According to the Tulsa World, 34-year-old Tony Jones is one who has been dealing with three rounds of chemotherapy to treat pancreatic cancer since his diagnosis in 2007 as well as rising debt following a layoff from his job.

“I’ve got bills out the wazoo,” he said.

Now spending his time at home with his two-year-old daughter Eden and 10-year-old son Joel, he added that the household’s only income was coming from his hairstylist wife Johanna.

“Since the economic slide, she’s making just enough to get by,” he told the World. “When we were both working we were doing great.”

In 2009, the National Institutes of Health estimated the 2008 overall annual costs of cancer across the country was $228.1 billion, with $93.2 billion attributed to direct medical costs.
