Arizona Gov sees no problem with allies working in favor of payday loans

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said she was fine with political associates of hers working to keep payday lenders in the stateArizona Governor Jan Brewer said on Monday that she saw was fine with some of her political associates” decisions to lobby on behalf of the payday loan industry as legislation is being considered to save the industry from being all but exiled from the state.

According to the Associated Press, Brewer said she didn”t "see a problem with it" when asked what she thought about her associates stumping for payday lenders. She added that she was confident they "will do what’’s right for the people of Arizona."

The "associates" of Brewer who were being spoken of likely referred to Chuck Coughlin, who is the president of Arizona-based lobbying firm HighGround.

According to the AP, HighGround is one of many firms being hired by state payday lenders in an attempt to drum up support for extending a law created in 2000 and currently set to expire on June 30, 2010 that allows payday lenders to charge fees for "deferred presentment transactions" that exceed state regulations.

If the law is not extended, most payday lenders will be unable to turn a profit and could be forced to go out of business.

Former state Attorney General Grant Woods has also thrown his support behind working to keep payday loans in business around the state, telling the Yuma Sun he felt they had a place in the state for those who needed them.

Early treatment of autism may lead to re-diagnosis for milder condition

Monday, November 30th, 2009

A new study finds that children with autism may benefit from early treatmentYoung children diagnosed with autism who receive aggressive specialized treatments at an early age may be more likely to overcome their illness.

According to the study, which was conducted by the University of Washington and which will have its results published online in the November 30 issue of Pediatrics, found that young autistic children responded favorably to two years of behavior treatment.

In the study, 48 children between the ages of 18 and 30 months old were either assigned into specialized treatments focusing on social interactions or less comprehensive therapy.

After two years, the group of children that received specialized treatments had their IQs increase by nearly 18 points while the children in the general group only saw an IQ increase of seven points.

The survey also found that children in the more specialized treatment were also more likely to be re-diagnosed with persuasive development disorder, a less severe illness.

“When done in this fashion, many children are able to learn and make remarkable progress,” said Geraldine Dawson, the study’s lead author and the chief science officer for Autism Speaks. “Some of the kids at the end of the study were going into regular preschool and had developed language and friendships with their peers.”

Families with young children who have been diagnosed with autism may be able to drastically improve their lives with aggressive therapy. If insurance does not cover payment for an essential treatment, short-term loans may be able to ease the high cost of the therapy.

Arizona Gov says she would consider payday loan legislation.

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Arizona''s governor would consider continuing to allow payday loansArizona Governor Jan Brewer continued to show signs that she may be supportive of allowing payday lenders to continue doing business within the state, saying on Monday that she would consider a law to extend payday loans in the state.

“Well, the legislature, of course, is a deliberatory (sic) body,” Brewer said, according to the Verde Independent. “And if they want to go in there and discuss payday loans I think that’’s what they were elected to do.”

Brewer also denied that she was ignoring public sentiment on the matter by continuing to give payday loans another chance in the state.

In 2008 the Payday Loan Reform Act – which proposed an extension of a special law enacted in 2000 with a “sunset clause” in 2010 that allows payday lenders to charge more fees than the state normally allowed – was denied at the ballots with nearly 60 percent of votes going against it, according to Ballotpedia.

“Actually, it’s my understanding from what I read in the newspaper and from the little bit of briefing from my staff that the payday lenders… are going to go in and they’re going to make some modifications,” the governor said, according to the Independent.

Earlier on Monday Brewer said she had no problems with the fact that some of her political associates had been recruited by the payday loan industry to lobby on their behalf.

Oral cancers on the rise among women, says study

Monday, November 30th, 2009

More women are developing oral cancerA form of cancer that traditionally affects men has been seen developing in increasing quantities over the past few years.

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, the rate of women developing different types of oral cancer has increased drastically in recent years.

While the rate of diagnosis has traditionally only seen one woman being diagnosed with some form of oral cancer for every six men who were, in the past 10 years the rate has become much tighter with one woman being diagnosed for every two men, CNN reported

The reason for the increase may be due to a link between human papillomavirus and the development of cancer in some women. While HPV is often found in many cases of cervical cancers, it can also have a similar ill effect if it becomes present in the mouth.

“The mouth is a perfect place for it to grow,” said prosthodontist Dr. Youssef Obeid, according to CNN, citing the moist, dark environment of the mouth that is ideal for HPV to cause irregular cells to grow.

He added that if HPV is transferred during oral sex, it can cause lesions that could become cancerous at times.

“It’s something we are very much aware of and look for, especially in women,” Obeid said.

Women who have developed HPV in their mouths are likely best served by receiving medications to treat and control the disease from a doctor. For those lacking insurance coverage, short-term loans may be able to cover any costs that may come with treatment.

Plan accordingly for astronomical wedding costs, especially during the economic downturn

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Wedding costs can skyrocket easilyAs families struggle financially while unemployment continues to rise and the economy recovers at a slow rate, many will also be faced with the exciting, but expensive, prospect of hearing their child is getting married.

With the average cost of a wedding costing upwards of $20,000, according to the aptly titled CostOfWedding.com, even a wedding done at a discounted rate could easily set a family back about $15,000.

When dealing with wedding expenses that surpass one’s budget, a payday loan may be able to alleviate some of the financial crunch and enable families to properly celebrate their child’s special day.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the economy has led to a litany of problems for couples planning on tying the knot as they try to finance the event. More and more often couples are deciding to downsize the event to make it more reasonable.

“The economy is what’s on everybody’s mind. More than anything, people are saying, ”We want to get married, but how do we pay for it?” Shane McMurray, CEO of wedding industry tracker the Wedding Report, told the Sun.

McMurray said that the economy has led to smaller scale weddings – with guest lists averaging 145 people as opposed to 166 in 2007 – as well as more cost effective wedding ceremonies as well.

However, he added that the lowest wedding costs, which were seen during Q2 2009, still averaged about $16,500 in total expenses.

COBRA subsidies come to an end for unemployed workers

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Unemployed workers are seeing their insurance subsidies expireTemporary subsidies covering large portions of health insurance costs for millions of unemployed workers across the country expired on Monday, leaving many who are already struggling financially without insurance coverage unless they can somehow pay for it.

The subsidies were approved as part of the federal stimulus package in February and were intended to allow up to 7 million jobless workers to remain on their former employer’s insurance plan for nine months by covering 65 percent of the costs.

“When workers lose their jobs, they often lose their health coverage as well,” said Ron Pollack, the director of FamiliesUSA, told Reuters. “For millions of laid-off workers and their families, the federal COBRA subsidies have been a health-coverage lifeline.”

With the subsidies now gone for its first wave of recipients, a report released by FamliesUSA on Tuesday found that – unless an extension of the benefits is approved by Congress – families with already limited incomes will be facing huge costs to make up for what COBRA used to pay, Reuters reported.

According to the report, average monthly family COBRA premiums varied from $979 in Idaho to $1,246 in Massachusetts.

For families who are unable to cover the increase in insurance costs but still need to pay for medical costs, payday loans may be able to help pay for medical bills that had previously been covered through the COBRA subsidies.

Renters still falling victim to foreclosure evictions, even though the law protects them

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Renters are falling victim to foreclosures as wellWhile the foreclosure crisis currently engulfing the housing market has made headlines as homeowners struggle to make payments, those who rent property have become victims of foreclosure evictions have not received the same attention.

According to the Washington Independent, increasing number of renters have become frustrated with the lack of protection they are receiving in the event their landlord is unable to make their payments and their house falls into foreclosure.

While federal protections have been put in place to guarantee renters the right to stay in their property for 90 days if their unit falls into foreclosure, many renters have not been properly notified of their rights.

“We’re definitely seeing a lot of problems with tenants that just get notes from Realtors that say the bank has foreclosed on your property, and it’s time to get out,” Shelley Wright a litigation director for New Haven Legal Assistance, told the Independent.

Judith Liben, a senior housing attorney with the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute, agreed, telling the Independent that despite whatever law may be in place there was always the chance that a disconnect could occur between a law’s intention and “what really happens on the street.”

Renters who fall victim to foreclosure evictions and are forced to suddenly leave their homes may be able to utilize payday loans as an emergency means to pay for some type of temporary housing as they attempt to figure out their long term housing situation.

Payday loans can ensure one is properly cared for following a dog bite

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Dog bites can prove fatal, even it they are minorSometimes even a nip from a trusted pet can develop into a serious medical situation that can potentially threaten one’s life. Such was the case for 55-year-old UK resident Steven Sewell during a vacation in the Scottish Highlands with his wife, son, and two dogs in May.

While playing a game of catch with the dogs, Judy – a half-blind Alsatian-Doberman mix – accidentally bit Sewell’s finger as it was lunging for a stick he was holding.

Despite the bite being large enough go to the bone of his hand, Sewell made no immediate attempt to sanitize the wound and later patched it up with sticking plaster after not finding any antiseptic.

Approximately six days later Sewell began feeling hot and experiencing odd dreams before suffering from diarrhea and the loss of feelings in his fingers. After going to a hospital it was determined that the wound had become infected and led to encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain.

He died on May 31.

According to WebMD, any dog bite should be immediately cleaned carefully with soap and water and treated with a clean towel to stop any bleeding. A trip to the doctor is also important for any bite to ensure that no infection occurs while also checking to make sure the dog did not have rabies.

For families who are not currently covered by any health insurance, payday loans can provide the quick cash to pay for any hospital visits that result from a dog bite.

Burial costs rise at home and across the pond

Monday, November 30th, 2009

A payday loan may enable families to offer their respects without worrying about moneyFamilies who find themselves facing the unfortunate situation of preparing a funeral for a loved one may be able to use payday loans to cover the rising costs associated with the services.

According to the Hartford Courant, many people have been forced to look for less desirable alternatives than a traditional burial as average costs for a funeral have been on the rise to almost $7,000.

“The economy is directing people to look for less expensive alternatives for everything, including funerals,” Luke DiMaria, owner of Abby Funeral & Cremation Service Inc. in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, told the Courant.

According to InsuranceAgents.com, the costs for some funerals can hover closer to $5,000. However, depending on certain specifications that are unique to most services – such as decisions regarding burial plots, caskets, grave markers, funeral vehicles, and flower arrangements – families can pay up to $9,000 for a complete service.

Rising funeral costs have become a widespread issue that many families are finding themselves forced to deal with during the recent recession. A recent UK poll by the National Association of Funeral Directors found that average funeral costs across the pond had risen 33 percent in the last five years.

Former Arizona AG supports payday lenders

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Arizona''s governor continues to show signs of support for payday lendersFormer Arizona state attorney general Grant Woods is one of the more prominent state officials to come out in support of payday loans, recently telling Capitol Media Services that he felt the short-term lenders filled an important role, the Yuma Sun recently reported.

With all of the controversy surrounding the concept of short-term loans, Woods told the Sun that payday loan officials had worked appropriately with lawmakers to make a resolution that would satisfy them while helping consumers as well.

“These are two-week loans, not annual loans,”” said Woods. “With about 94 percent of borrowers paying off within that time frame.”

He added that he would be presenting a plan to state lawmakers proposing that borrowers who are unable to pay back their loans within two weeks would receive an extra 60 days to pay it back without incurring any extra fees or interest rates.

“I don’t know any industry, any business, any bank, anybody who will give you 60 days, no fee, no interest,” he added.

Despite Woods’ stumping in their favor, the state remains divided on payday loans. Last year voters rejected a motion created by payday lenders to repeal a law enacted in 2000 that would force them to close on June 30, 2010.
